Stan McMurtry, otherwise known as MAC of the Sunday Mail has been creating daily cartoons for nearly 40 years, firstly for the now extinct Daily Sketch and latterly the Mail.
Mac’s work is essentially apolitical and he views his role as making ‘dreary news copy of the Sunday paper brighter by putting in a laugh’
Among his many awards, MAC has been voted ‘Cartoonist of the Year’ on six occasions and ‘Political Cartoonist of the Year’ four times.
In 1999 he was voted Fourth Top Cartoonist of the Century (and only one still alive). In 2004 he was granted an MBE for services to the newspaper industry and in 2008 hewas thrilled to be invited as a guest on the radio programme ‘Desert Island Discs’.
